1. Becky suggested going back the way they came
because they were getting more lost as they tried different paths, and
she was overwhelmed by the fear of the situation worsening.
2. Tom initially resisted the idea of going back through the path with
the bats because he was concerned that the bats might extinguish their
candles, leaving them in darkness and making their situation even more
dire.
3. Tom and Becky tried to find their way out by walking in silence,
looking at each new opening, and hoping to recognize something familiar.
However, all the paths looked different, and Tom began to choose paths
at random in a desperate attempt to find the correct one.
4. Becky cried and expressed regret because she realized they were lost
and feared they would never find their way out.
5. Initially, Tom tried to maintain a positive attitude, reassuring
Becky that everything was “all right.” However, as they continued to
make mistakes and he eventually admitted to Becky that he had not made
