Yuval Noah Harari is a historian, philosopher, and
bestselling author of books such as Sapiens: A Brief History of
Humankind, Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow and 21 Lessons for the
21st Century.
Harari was born in Israel, in 1976, and attended the University of
Oxford in the UK. In 2002 he got a PhD, and he's currently a lecturer at
the Department of History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
He originally specialized in world history, medieval history and
military history, and his current research focuses on macro-historical
questions such as:
• What is the relationship between history and
biology?
• What is the essential difference between Homo sapiens and other
animals?
• Is there justice in history?
• Does history have a direction?
• Did people become happier as history unfolded?
• What ethical questions do science and technology raise in the 21st
century?
These are all very big questions indeed, and Harari goes a long way
towards dissecting them and explaining some, if not all, the intricacies
buried in these questions.
Harari is also co-founder of the Sapienship organization which advocates
for global responsibility and whose mission is to clarify the public
conversation, support the quest for solutions and focus attention on the
most important challenges facing the world today, such as technological
disruption, ecological collapse and the threat of nuclear war.
Prof. Harari lectures around the world on the topics explored in his
books and articles, and has written for publications such as The
Guardian, Financial Times, The New York Times, The Atlantic, The
Economist and Nature magazine.
His books have sold over 40 million copies in 65 languages, and he is
considered one of the world’s most influential public intellectuals
today.
