Verbling
Verbling is a marketplace for language learning that connects students
and teachers. It’s often compared to iTalki.
Verbling’s user interface is easier to navigate than iTalki, but it's
more limited and has fewer filters. For example, at the moment, Verbling
has no gender filter nor any way to search for specific teaching skills
such as preparation for certain exams.
Like iTalki you can read a teacher profile and watch an introductory
video of the teacher to get an idea of the teacher’s approach before you
book a lesson.
Verbling has a huge pool of English teachers to choose from, about
6,000. There's also a discussion forum, some free language exercises,
flashcards, a homework calendar and a filing system so that you can
organize your lesson materials.
On Verbling, you're using their online platform and classroom. With
iTalki, the classes are often on Zoom or Skype.
Verbling works best on a desktop computer or laptop, but there is also a
mobile app that you use on iOS and Android phones.
Prices are set by the teacher and range from $5 to $75 for an hour-long
lesson. You can get a discount for buying a batch of lessons and there's
often a free trial lesson given by the teacher.
General opinion online seems to be that iTalki can be a cheaper
alternative, but teachers on Verbling tend to give slightly better-quality
lessons. This is a general opinion based on reviews and should be taken
with a pinch of salt.
ITalki and Verbling both charge the same 15% commission rate to teachers.
So, if a lesson costs $10 dollars, the teacher only keeps $8.50.
