The Queen
At 96 years of age, Queen Elizabeth II has ruled
longer than any other British monarch and this year she is celebrating
70 years on the throne.
Despite looking frail and needing to rest between her public duties, she
continues to perform her role with grace, dignity and remarkable
resilience.
She became queen when she was 25 after her father, King George VI passed
away in 1952. She was crowned Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and has been
ruling the United Kingdom and her overseas territories ever since.
As monarch, the Queen has some political power, but these days she
doesn’t use these reserve powers very often and tends to stay out of,
and above, politics. That being said, she does have quite a bit of
influence, and has the right to encourage, and to warn.
You would be forgiven for thinking that the Queen has billions of pounds
and could easily outspend British billionaires and titans of industry
such as Richard Branson, James Dyson and Jim Ratcliffe. However, this is
not true. She is the richest royal, though and her net wealth is
estimated at more than £350 million. Quite honestly, I thought it would
be more, especially since her picture is on all the money!
Despite being very much in the public eye, there are many things we do
not know about the Queen. However, we do know that she enjoys a nice cup
of Earl Grey tea from time to time, and that she has a bowl of Special K
cereal every morning.
Rumour has it she likes an evening gin and Dubonnet or a glass of
champagne. Of course, we also know she loves her pet corgis! She’s had
over 30 of them since she first became queen in 1952.
