Tandem
Tandem is a language exchange app.
The name is inspired by the two-seater bicycle - TANDEM is a bicycle
designed for two riders both involved in going forward.
Tandem has over 1 million users from all over the world and the app is
available on iOS and Android phones.
Submit your profile information, including photo (compulsory) and wait
for email approval which can take up to 7 days.
Tandem has a free option, but you need to enter credit card information
even if you only want the free version.
The Tandem app has 4 main areas of interest.
1. "Community" - search for language partners (you
search for a native English speaker who wants to practice your language)
2. "Tutors" - find a paid language teacher
3. "Chats" - open chat with other learners - you can leave voice
messages and have a voice or video call. The chat has useful tools like
'translate' and text auto-correct (limited in free version)
4. "Goals" - post your own public goals to the community and get
motivated by reading other students' goals.
There is a limited free version of Tandem and a pro version available at
$6.99 for one month, $3.99/month for three months, and $2.92/month for a
year’s subscription.
If you pay for the pro version, you remove the ads, get unlimited
message translation and you can search for language partners in your
local area.
Tandem is used by some people as a dating app and it’s sometimes
compared to Tinder. For this reason, many female users prefer to search
for other females and block male users.
