What is Movember?
You may have heard the term Movember before, or even noticed men growing
moustaches only in the month of November.
But what is this hair-themed month all about?
Well, Movember is an initiative that originated in Melbourne, Australia
(where ‘mo’ is short for moustache) and raises awareness of men’s health
issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and
suicide prevention.
In the month of November every year, the Movember Foundation asks people
around the world to take part in men’s health awareness and fundraising
activities.
Men (called Mo Bros) are encouraged to grow a moustache every November
in commemoration. People also hold fundraising walks, bike rides, and
other events.
Since 2003, when the movement began, the Movember Foundation has
provided funds for 1,250 men’s health projects worldwide and raised over
$100 million in cash.
Some people take part in Movember just for fun and to have a bit of a
laugh, but many people take this month-long commitment extremely
seriously. Whatever your opinion is, I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s a
pretty good way to get people talking about men’s health issues and
raise awareness.
