Are electric airplanes a thing now?
We’re pretty much used to electric cars,
scooters and trains but are electric planes the next big th¡ng?
Well, there has been a huge demand for small electric planes for short
local trips. 2 billion tickets are sold each year for flights shorter
than 800 kilometres.
You may think that electric-powered aircraft is very new technology. In
fact, it’s not that new. This type of flight was first tested in the
1800s.
Don’t get too excited, though. It’s going to be a long time before you
can fly from Spain to New Zealand by electric plane. The biggest
challenge at the moment is in developing electric technology for long-haul
flights. The reason for this is because of the size of the plane in
relation to battery power. Long-haul flights tend to need larger planes.
Hopefully, it won’t be too long before e-travel becomes mainstream.
There are certainly advantages for the passenger. They include cheaper
tickets, quieter travel and faster flight times.
And, of course, they are much more environmentally friendly. The
emissions per person on a non-electric flight from London to New York is
more or less the same as a person in Europe heating their home for a
year.
