What
is Christmas?
For many people, Christmas is the time of year to think
about buying presents,
time with the
family and possibly eating and drinking too
!
Of course, you’re a
person, you’ll be
celebrating the birth of Christ and going to
. Many of us,
however, are happy to have a few days off work and, for the
lucky ones, an end-of-year Christmas
.
But what does the festive season mean for you? For me it’s a
time to look back at the year gone by and to think about how
I’ve spent it. Have I
all the things I
wanted to back in January? Am I happy and
with the way the
year has gone and what goals, both personal and
professional, will I be
for myself for the coming year?
So, for me, it’s a time of
, a time to
re-charge my batteries and look ahead with
and expectancy.
Above all Christmas is a time to give thanks to whatever God
you may have. I’m not a religious person, but I am thankful
for family, for friends and for life.

No Tree, no big deal!
There was no tree, but we did have Christmas
in our home. They
we called paper chains and came in
of different
coloured paper.
My mum, my sister, my nan and I would sit at the kitchen
table a couple of weeks before Christmas and
the
ends before
joining the strips together in a chain. We’d then
then on the walls
with a few balloons sellotaped between them for effect.
My dad would go to the open market in the East end of London
to buy Christmas goodies. He always went alone and came back
with huge boxes
full of fruit, chocolates,
and biscuits.
There was always a couple of boxes of ‘Eat Me’ dates that
ever ate.
My nan made the Christmas cake which
a ton and had a
sixpence inside. It nearly broke your teeth if you weren’t
careful. Finding it was
to be lucky.
On Christmas morning I always woke up to find a present at
the of my bed.
This was a tactic
employed my mum to keep me occupied so as not to wake my
parents too early on Christmas Day.
Presents were divided into groups. My sister and I had the
most and they were usually
around two large
armchairs. Smaller
belonged to my Parents, my nan and my sister’s boyfriend, if
she had one that year.
Mid-morning Champaign with the
was followed by
me playing with my new toys and games before the
lunch of dry
turkey and all the trimmings. The Queen’s
, dad sleeping in
the chair and a special film on the TV all helped to make
Christmas an unforgettable experience. It never once
to me that there
might be something missing, not even a tree!

HUMOUR - Joke of the month
Trust
Him?
On the Sunday before Christmas Reverend Billy Graham was
walking down Highland street in Mt Holly, North Carolina on
his way to see a parishioner.
However, he wanted to post a parcel urgently so he asked a
young boy where he could find the post office.
When the boy had directed him, Reverend Graham thanked him
and said, 'If you'll come to the Church this evening, you
can hear me telling everyone how to get to heaven.'
The boy replied, 'I think I'll give your sermon a miss.
If you don't even know your way to the post office, how will
you lead me to heaven?'

How To Improve Your Reading
If
you’re reading this you’re already taking steps to improve your reading,
so well done! Chapeau!
But, apart from getting our monthly newsletter, what other things can
you read?
Well, the short answer is you should read anything and everything in
English, from novels to jam jar labels. Why not begin with the news?
Websites like the BBC, CNN, Reuters and VOA have world news and local
news and you can also read British and North American newspaper websites
(
todalaprensa.com ).
Perhaps the most motivating way to read more in English is to find blogs
and websites that cover topics you are interested in.
Do you have any hobbies? If you like photography, search for photography
blogs in English. Are you into cooking? There are many wonderful cooking
blogs and récipes online, and they often have videos in English to show
you how to cook. On the other hand, perhaps travel is your thing…you get
the idea, right?
Instead of Googling for websites in Spanish, search for English sites
and blogs. You can also comment in the forums which will help improve
your writing. If you don’t like reading online, buy a hardcopy English
magazine in real paper!
Do you enjoy reading fiction? Graded readers are books that have been
adapted for different levels of English. This is important because
there’s nothing worse than reading when you don’t understand a lot of
the words. It’s demotivating and you probably won’t keep reading very
long if you only understand a small part of the text. Even very small
texts can help you. Read food packaging on boxes and packets. Read road
signs when you travel and instruction manuals that come with electronic
appliances and devices. There’s often English on clothes labels, too.
Put English subtitles on films that you
watch if possible and read song lyrics in English on YouTube. Consistency
is important, so make sure you’re reading regularly. Why not take an
English book or magazine to bed with you and read for ten minutes before
you go to sleep every night?.
When you read, have a dictionary close to you and look up and write down
any new interesting words and expressions. However, don’t write every
word down, you can guess some words from the context.
Unlike speaking and listening, reading has no time limit. You can go
back and re-read the same sentence or paragraph as many times as
necessary until you understand it. Keep a record of new words and write
the meaning next to it in Spanish. You’ll be surprised how quickly your
vocabulary and your grammar will improve!
