How To Become a Firefighter
I wanted to be a fireman when I was a kid. I think
the red fire engines and prospect of danger attracted me. I pictured my
9-year-old self running fearlessly into a burning building and carrying
out a young mother and her crying baby in my arms.
But if you want to be a firefighter in the UK, what do you need to do?
Well, according to the information on the website fireservice.co.uk, you
need to be very fit, have good eyesight and pass many tests including a
psychological test, a physical test and an interview.
Anyone over 18 years of age can join and there is no maximum age (so
maybe there’s still hope for me yet!).
When I was young, there used to be restrictions on height, weight and
chest expansion. This is no longer the case, but you will be expected to
pass strength and fitness tests as part of the recruitment process.
On the website it says that the tests are at a level that is achievable
by men and women of all different sizes and builds. The physical tests
include climbing ladders, carrying heavy equipment and evacuating
casualties.
There are also particular personal attributes you will need to have
within your role as a firefighter. These include confidence, resilience,
adaptability, ability to communicate effectively, integrity and have a
commitment to diversity.
If you're wondering how much firefighters earn in the UK, they start on
a salary of 23,366 pounds, that’s 25,835 euros. This is while they're
training. This goes up to 31,144 pounds, or 34,435 euros, once you are
fully trained.
It's possible to earn more money if you work overtime. Those salaries
are yearly, by the way, not monthly!
