School Days
I went to a normal government funded school in my area. It wasn’t
private, but it was a grammar school, which meant it was not mixed sex,
so boys only, and it was considered a pretty good school at the time.
After three years, when I was 14, the local government changed and the
grammar school became a comprehensive, which meant that girls could
attend. Of course, we were all over the moon! Nothing made an all-boys
school happier than a sudden influx of hundreds of girls!
We had to wear a school uniform. It was brown and we hated it. I
especially hated having to wear a tie, and to this day I protest
strongly on the few occasions when I have to wear a tie, for a wedding.
It was a long way from my house to my school, so my mum usually took me
in the car and picked me up at 4 at the end of the school day.
I was old enough to go by bus, but it would have meant getting two buses
there and two back.
I was envious of my school mates who sat at the back of the bus and
seemed to have such a good time messing around and having fun.
