Working on a Cruise Ship
It’s not easy working on a cruise ship. For as
start, You’re away from your family for long periods at a time.
Mediterranean cruises are fairly short and usually only last a week or
10 days, but some ships cruise the Americas and the round trip can take
up to 5 or 6 weeks.
I started working as a ship photographer because I have a background in
photography. This was back in 2015. But I realized quite quickly that I
can earn a higher salary as a health and safety officer. So, I did a
couple of private courses (I had to pay for them myself, by the way!)
and when I was qualified, I was a offered a promotion. I was 25 at the
time, so I’ve been doing my current job for 3 years.
Apart from being responsible for the safety of the passengers and crew,
I also have to run training courses for the crew so that everyone knows
what to do in case of emergency. I run regular drills and I’m on call 24
hours a day. Although, I only have to work 10 hours when we’re at sea,
so I have lots of time to socialize.
