Sloanes
One of the most enjoyable jobs I’ve ever had was
working in an English pub. The work was hard, the hours were long and
the pay was pretty bad, but the social experience and good times I had
more than made up for it.
The pub was called Sloanes, and it was in a London suburb. The pub was
run by a married couple, David and Chris, and I was bar-cellarman, which
means I was in charge of the staff and running the bar on a day-to-day
basis. This included beer deliveries, care of the cellar, opening and
closing etc. I worked six days a week and I had Mondays off.
The pub had been converted into an upmarket kind of wine-bar, disco pub
just before I started, so at lunchtime and early evenings we had the
long-time regulars who had been drinking there for years and around 9
o’clock the atmosphere changed and a younger crowd came in and we turned
up the music and mixed expensive cocktails.
It was really, really busy, especially at weekends. In those days pubs
had to close at 11pm on Friday and Saturday nights and it was always a
fight to get people to finish up their drinks and go home.
Speaking of fights, there were some nasty fights in the pub sometimes
too, or outside in the carpark. I kept my distance from those.
